Concerning Minimalism
I take minimalism to mean art which eliminates superfluous detail, the goal being to strip away unique embellishments, ending with pure visual experience. Pure — allowing a viewer to see what is there and nothing more. It might be the opposite of Baroque, a style known for profuse and luxurious surface detail, sometimes including personal mannerisms of the creator. Those artists attempt to resolve the complications in an image by finding and expressing harmonies underlying and buttressing the composition.
Above and below I share photographs in the spirit of minimalism. Most of my work leans opposite, toward the baroque; searching for harmonic resonances beneath a world buzzing with facts and sensations challenges me more consistently and powerfully.
