Another From the Island of Serendip

Like the three princes of Serendip, I often find what I am not looking for. I was walking along the Gulf of Finland searching for the simple house Peter the Great designed for himself — away from the monumental palace at Petergof — when I entered this scene. I felt as if I had stepped into a zone of numinous tranquility. The six people on benches were not conversing, and it was hard to tell how they were related. They were just sitting — midst the eloquent calm of the water and the delicate summer light of that far northern latitude.
