From the Ghost Collection — A North American Frontiersman

He is Pre-American (before nationhood) therefore a stateless subject of the English King. His buckskin — and the improvised uniform lacking insignia — give him away.

Beyond the determination evident in the way he holds his mouth, our subject gives us only enigmatical indications of his present state of mind. He has dropped in from three centuries gone, a historical past beyond most powers of imagination. He appears entranced by something in the realm of visions and dreams. What is he seeing? He lifts his eyes toward an earthly horizon, throwing his shoulders back while inflating his chest, as if to say: “This land is mine as far as man or bird can see.”

As for the definite lines of disgust inscribed at this moment on the man’s face — I have no explanation.
