What Can You Tell From A Face?

She is our subject, however I can tell nothing biographical about her, and nothing intimate beyond what can be ascertained from this two-dimensional surface. Because of her obvious personal equilibrium, it appears as if the woman posed for this portrait. She did not; this is pure candid photography. She was standing at Keeneland Race Course looking west intently focused on something in the distance. I cannot say for sure whether the squint in her right eye expresses skepticism, or rather is a reaction to the low angle of the sun.

We can be sure the earring is solid silver, well-tooled — nothing cheap, and her piercing landed dead center, right where it should be and there is only one perforation in the earlobe — not a woman who would wear redundant or extravagant amounts of jewelry. Makeup: minimalist and in restrained good taste, lipstick prudently and accurately applied. Eyebrows not glamorous or shiny, instead: tidy and naturalistic. One strand of blond hair of has escaped and rests on her shoulder. She is unaware, otherwise I do not think she would allow it to remain there.

She is unmistakably an intelligent woman (perhaps highly intelligent), well-bred with a university education, money and the self-assurance emanating from these profound benefits. Nothing at all wrong with her brain — a person who can concentrate for long periods on her chosen objective. She is at the track, about to view a horse race and dresses the part, her cap bleached pure white. The rest of her outfit is clean and casual and perfectly blended. I would guess she knows horses, maybe owns one or possibly a few of them.

There are limits to photo-analysis, so speculating about her sense of humor becomes more difficult. I would be surprised if she likes jokes with explicit reference to sexual equipment, those with little wit and zero innuendo so popular today. She might drink alcohol but hardly ever to excess. I would guess a very loyal friend, however it will be tough to win her friendship. Husband? Suitors? We are in the dark. I might predict a few things: she will pick from an exclusive club, few men would qualify even for casual dating —- which I think is not her habit or preference — and only a thoroughbred man would have a practical chance at winning her affection and loyalty.
