Specimen — Wild Apple Tree
I made this picture near the entrance to a famous hiking trail in Arizona. In fact the place is so heavily visited and well-trodden there is typically a wait for a parking place. In earlier times this land was privately owned and farmed, planted with orchards bearing nuts and fruits to feed its historical inhabitants. I unfolded a tripod to photograph some old apple trees; this one with its gnarled trunk particularly interested me. A woman trekker passed by quickly with efficient steps like most other adults that day, but her daughter — about six years years old — stopped and gazed at me curiously. The mom halted and turned back. The little girl said, “Mommy, what is that man doing?” “He’s taking a picture, honey.” “But why?” The mom gave no explanation. I believe she had no answer to give at all, at least not one the youngster would understand. Instead she grabbed her daughter’s hand and moved on up the trail.
