Is This Photograph Readable?

Most photographs have obvious meaning when considered as a flat surface, even if simply: “I was there, and this is what I saw.” If  you have special knowledge of the subject you might go deeper, however the significance lies close to the picture plane. Other photos might signify something more. For instance: “I was there, this scene excited me, moved me, and here is my attempt to convey that experience.” Perhaps the viewer can empathize, or recognize those same emotions in themselves.

The photo above wants to go in another direction. It is a disturbing image; the subject seems ill-defined and ghostly. It could be murky for a technical reason: the image lacks unified composition. It seems like two separate unrelated images; the horse and rider in the tunnel appears as one subject and the spectators at the track another. The mounted horse lives in monochrome shade, while the racing fans enjoy a world of color, though muted by overcast sky.

Going further requires free exercise of imagination. The onlookers seem unconscious of — and unconcerned about — events behind them in the tunnel. The faceless rider might stand for a menace approaching their lives, a mythical harbinger or an eruption from their personal past. It seems too simple to take the darkened horse as a symbol of their Death, however the obvious might be the truth. They have censored our ominous foreground from their thoughts, hoping a day at the races will divert them and help them forget the end of every person’s biography.
