What Was He Thinking?
I took this photograph from a taxi moving approximately 50 miles per hour in chaotic traffic; the Levantine Sea forms the backdrop. May we draw conclusions after studying this picture? Perhaps the father’s life is worth more than his daughter’s life and health; or his being-in-the-world has more value than the wife’s existence, who rides precariously side-saddle on the back of the scooter. Maybe they can afford only one helmet. That is a weak excuse: a motorbike is expensive, helmets cheap by comparison and so are Egyptian taxi rides. This whole configuration screams danger and puts me on edge. A sudden stop would catapult the girl into the road and probably injure her brain. The woman in nikab (face-covering) balances on the bike without any restraint — not even holding fast to her husband’s body — and she would surely be thrown into traffic during the slightest accident. The question remains: “What is this man thinking?”
