Honoring Local Heroes
An American GI stands in the square of a mountain town in Arizona. He does more than just stand — he assumes a classic posture with arm and hand raised at the perfect angle; the crown and the rim of his helmet follow the same line flawlessly. The soldier petitions the Divine for assistance perhaps — or beckons to a descending helicopter — the sculpture itself provides no guidance; the viewer must decode the meaning of this dramatic gesture alone and unaided. The artist leaves details of equipment and weaponry vague, making the era hard to pin down. The monument indeed points not to one specific war or conflict, but to several; it honors veterans from this mostly rural county who died in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Global War On Terror. On the monument’s base the visitor will find nearly two hundred names engraved on shiny plaques.
